I’m just that kid who grew up loving horses. I wanted to be a cowboy or a horseman—if I even knew what that meant. In all reality, if I had some job in town, I would pay to do this on the weekends. I didn’t really want to be an astronaut, or a policeman, or a fireman—I just love horses. Now I am recognizing that there’s just so much to horsemanship. It’s a lifelong endeavor that you never stop in this thing. I mean, I got more questions about this horsemanship thing now than I’ve ever had in my life. That’s why on the side of our trailer, it says ‘Enjoy the Journey’, because I’ve kind of realized I’m never going to get to the destination. Grove, DVM It is January and the foals are coming. I thought a review of what I look for in a newborn foal exam was worth revisiting. Twelve to twenty four hours after birth, it is an excellent idea to have your newborn evaluated by your veterinarian. This month, I would like to discuss what I do on my new foal exams and why. (Mark Blakley photo) BURBANK—The California Reining Horse Association saw its largest Challenge Horse Show in recent memory. Approximately 330 stalls were sold with many of those spaces filled with horses from out of state. The prestigious futurity and last derby of the year brought the competition out. The show has garnered the reputation of hosting one of the premier futurities on the West Coast. Through the years, many of the top horses made famous at the NRHA Futurity were seen showing in the Burbank class first. This year was no exception. Martin Muehlstaetter won the L4 division on Seven On Seven owned by Anne Solbraekke. The pair laid down a scorching 148.5 to win. (John O’Hara photos) SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—The Arizona Reining Horse Association hosted its “Best of The West” show at West World Oct. 1-6, paying out more than $260,000 for all classes—including over $130,000 in the open and non pro futurities. Highlights were in abundance, from Craig Schmersal’s Open Derby title with a 225.5 aboard Pale Face Gunslinger in the Open Derby, to a battle in the Non Pro Derby between Luca Fappani on Spooks N Jewels and Jennifer Neudorf on Shining In Town—ultimately won by Luca by a half-point, 220-219.5. The Open Futurity winner was Andrea Fappani on Guns In My Genes, owned by Rancho Oso Rio, with a 226. Grove, DVM Horses are extremely good at dealing with a drop in temperature. I have driven through snow-filled states in temperatures in the teens and watched horses happily walking through the snow without a care in the world, no shivering or any other sign of a low body temperature. I have been in Southern California when it was 50° F out and I have full-grown adult mares coming into the barn to be palpated—and they were shivering like no tomorrow. What is the difference? Mostly, human management!
